Memories on Oak Street

The house seemed so small.
Jamie met us at the Southfork Cafe last Saturday morning and we were actually going to check out some yard sales. We drove down Oak Street here in Salem, and I had Jamie stop so I could get some pictures of NeeNee Scott's former house. When she was still living in the house -somewhere around 1982 was when she had to go to the nursing home-the porch was enclosed with screen. NeeNee Scott always had rockers and a chaise lounge out there. Of course, the trees either were not there, or were very much smaller. She would sit out there and keep tabs on the community on Oak street or visit with the Harris family from across the street. Mrs. Delmonte lived next door and had lots of cats which always wondered over to our porch. Many nights I sat out there with my boyfriends and constantly answered NeeNee's questions through the door so she would know that I was still an honored good girl. For 30 years, a green piece of fabric was thumbtacked to the electric pole by the driveway. It was to guide her young kindergartners to her house as she taught private classes in her sunroom. Some like Bro. John Hodges would walk from across town and needed help , at first, finding her house on the street.
We went on up the street and turned in front of the old high school. Over another street and up across from where the old home ec building used to be is the daycare center where Sach and Jake attended loving care directed by Debbie Coleman. I just thought I'd get a pic while we were driving past. They have made apartments out of the old elementary building where I went to Head Start.
